Description: Spotlight on Structured Query Language (SQL) Server Enterprise is a database diagnostic and resolution software. When Spotlight detects a condition that it considers a potential problem, the software informs the user, advises what to look at to diagnose the problem further, and suggests corrective actions. Spotlight combines data from several disparate sources into a single user interface. This technology collects and combines data from Windows performance counters, SQL Server system tables, SQL Server commands and the Windows registry, and presents them in logically related screens.

Spotlight is available in two editions: Enterprise and Standard. The Enterprise Edition is deployable with a separate Spotlight Diagnostic Server and multiple clients. The Standard Edition is a single installation. This entry covers the Enterprise Edition only.

This technology installs two databases (Playback Database and Spotlight Statistics Repository) on any Microsoft SQL Server of the user`s choosing. These databases store historical data of all SQL Servers the user is monitoring. Additionally, this technology can monitor Spotlight connections from the Spotlight Cloud website or using Spotlight Cloud Mobile, which monitors connections remotely via a mobile device. The Spotlight Cloud service allows for performance data to be uploaded for health check analysis.

The TRM decisions in this entry only apply to technologies and versions owned, operated, managed, patched, and version-controlled by VA. This includes technologies deployed as software installations on VMs within VA-controlled cloud environments (e.g. VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC)). Cloud services provided by the VAEC, which are listed in the VAEC Service Catalog, and those controlled and managed by an external Cloud Service Provider (i.e. SaaS) are not in the purview of the TRM. For more information on the use of cloud services and cloud-based products within VA, including VA private clouds, please see the Enterprise Cloud Solutions Office (ECSO) Portal at:

This entry covers the Desktop Edition of this technology and not any mobile versions. Please note that the implementation of mobile technology applications that operate on Mobile Operating Systems must be reviewed and approved by the Mobile Technology and Endpoint Security Engineering Team:
