Note: |
At the time of writing, version 4.35 is the most current version, released 02/28/2025. |
| | [10] | Users should check with their supervisor, Information System Security Officer (ISSO) or local OIT representative for permission to download and use this software. Downloaded software must always be scanned for viruses prior to installation to prevent adware or malware. Freeware may only be downloaded directly from the primary site that the creator of the software has advertised for public download and user or development community engagement. Users should note, any attempt by the installation process to install any additional, unrelated software is not authorized and the user should take the proper steps to decline those installations. | | [11] | Due to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) identified security vulnerabilities, extra vigilance should be applied to ensure the versions remain properly patched to mitigate known and future vulnerabilities. The local ISSO (Information System Security Officer) can provide assistance in reviewing the NIST vulnerabilities. | | [13] | The Federal Information Processing standards (FIPS) 140-2 certification status of this technology was not able to be verified. This technology will require a 3rd party FIPS 140-2 or 140-3 certified solution for any data containing PHI/PII or VA sensitive information, where applicable. More information regarding the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) can be found on the NIST website. | | [16] | Veterans Affairs (VA) users must ensure VA sensitive data is properly protected in compliance with all VA regulations. All instances of deployment using this technology should be reviewed by the local ISSO (Information System Security Officer) to ensure compliance with both VA Handbook 6500 and VA Directive 6500. | | [17] | This technology must use the latest TRM-authorized version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) - IBM.
This technology must use the latest TRM-authorized version of Java Development Kit (JDK) - IBM.
This technology must use the latest TRM-authorized version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) - Oracle.
This technology must use the latest TRM-authorized version of Java Development Kit (JDK) - Oracle.
This technology should not be used with Open Java Development Kit (OpenJDK) as it is unapproved for use at this time.
Per the Security Assessment Review, users must abide by the following constraints:
- To mitigate, the ISSO shall educate and prohibit users from using the integrated cloud service capability until the VA Cloud Security Requirements have been met and the affected A&A package has been appropriately updated..
- To mitigate, the administrator shall control the versioning of Eclipse IDE version 2022.x software and do not allow users to install unapproved versions.
- To mitigate maintenance and support will be provided for the Open-Source Software used within Eclipse IDE version 2022.x as per the applications lifecycle.
- To mitigate, administrators shall disable features within the GUI and manage software sites.
| | [18] | Due to potential information security risks for cloud-based technologies, users should coordinate closely with their facility ISSO for guidance and assistance on cloud products. If further guidance is needed contact the Enterprise Cloud Solution Office (ECSO), which is the body responsible for new software development in and migration of existing systems to the VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC) and ensuring organizational information, Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), and VA sensitive data are not compromised within the VAEC. For information about Software as a Service (SaaS) products or to submit a SaaS product request, visit the Product Marketplace. (Ref: VA Directive 6004, VA Directive 6517, VA Directive 6513 and VA Directive 6102). | | [19] | This technology must use the latest TRM-authorized version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) - IBM.
- A vulnerability exists because Eclipse IDE 2024-12 (4.34) is not FIPS 140-2 (or its successor) certified. To mitigate, Eclipse IDE will require a 3rd party FIPS 140-2 certified solution for any data containing Personal Health Information (PHI) / Personally Identifiable Information (PII) or VA sensitive information.
- A vulnerability exists because Eclipse IDE 2024-12 (4.34) is open-source software. To mitigate, the use of open-source products, lacking any vendor support, hosting potentially critical VA production systems may pose severe security risks to the VA. Relying on vendor support may result in slow response times and non-timely patches. There is an Enterprise version of this software which provide Enterprise-grade support. Users should check with their supervisor, ISSO or local Office of information Technology representative for permission to download and use this software. The vendor is responsible for all aspect of the software lifecycle and assuring the product receives timely updates to resolve any outstanding vulnerabilities.
- A vulnerability exists because Eclipse IDE 2024-12 (4.34) runs by default with check for updates enabled. To mitigate, administrators shall disable the ability for Eclipse IDE to check for updates. This can be done via the Eclipse config file or through the Graphical User Interface (GUI).
- A vulnerability exists because the Eclipse IDE 2024-12 (4.34) download is blocked by VA policy. To mitigate, system owners/administrators need to be aware that the program files need to be acquired by the alternate download location listed on the vendor website or a trusted VA repository if available.
- A vulnerability exists because Eclipse IDE 2024-12 (4.34) includes/utilizes
commercial cloud computing services. To mitigate, the ISSO shall educate and prohibit users from using the integrated cloud service capability until the VA Cloud Security Requirements have been met and the affected A&A package has been appropriately updated.
- A Vulnerability exists because Eclipse IDE 2024-12 (4.34) includes a Software Improvement Program which sends various types of information back to the Vendor. To mitigate, administrators shall disable features within the GUI, config file, and manage software sites.
