Description: Varskin is a computer code system used to assess skin radiation dose (gamma and beta) from skin contamination. Five different predefined source configurations are available to allow simulations of point, disk, cylinder, sphere, and slab sources. This technology also includes an enhanced photon dosimetry model, as well as models to account for air gap and cover materials for photon dosimetry.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) provides an electronic database of the physical data needed in calculations of radionuclide-specific protection and operational quantities. This technology offers two options of dose calculations based on the decay date of ICRP 38 or ICRP 170. The user selects the nuclear database from which to extract decay data. Results can be saved to the user`s local drive or printed in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format.

Previous versions of this code were simply referred to as VARSKIN. These new models in conjunction with the classic VARSKIN are now collectively referred to as VARSKIN+. The models that are contained under VARSKIN+ are SkinDose (classic VARSKIN), WoundDose, NeutronDose, EyeDose.
Technology/Standard Usage Requirements: Users must ensure their use of this technology/standard is consistent with VA policies and standards, including, but not limited to, VA Handbooks 6102 and 6500; VA Directives 6004, 6513, and 6517; and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).
