Description: Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) Server is a scalable server that provides multi-user access to data that is stored in SAS OLAP cubes. The purpose of the SAS OLAP Server is to respond to queries from cube viewers. SAS OLAP queries are performed using the Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query language in client applications that are connected to the OLAP server by using either Object Linking and Embedding Database (OLE DB), OLAP, or a similarly designed Java interface. SAS OLAP Server runs in the background on specially configured host computers.

SAS OLAP Server is a multidimensional database that provides a process for extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) data from back-end systems and file formats. SAS OLAP Server can create cubes based on any data stored in any kind of database on all operating systems. A cube is always loaded from data in relational tables. This data can be stored either in SAS tables or in external Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and is accessed through the SAS Base engine. A SAS OLAP cube stores data in a method that enables fast retrieval of summarized data. Data summarization in this context means condensing large numbers of detailed records into meaningful numbers such as counts, sums, averages, or other statistical measures.

SAS OLAP Server has a single shared layer of metadata for traceability from the operational source, through the ETL process, to the destination OLAP cube. All definitions of OLAP data sources are stored in a centralized repository on the SAS Metadata Server, which maintains central security information required to prevent unauthorized access to information.

This technology utilizes an embedded proprietary database.
Technology/Standard Usage Requirements: Users must ensure their use of this technology/standard is consistent with VA policies and standards, including, but not limited to, VA Handbooks 6102 and 6500; VA Directives 6004, 6513, and 6517; and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). Users must ensure sensitive data is properly protected in compliance with all VA regulations. Prior to use of this technology, users should check with their supervisor, Information Security Officer (ISO), Facility Chief Information Officer (CIO), or local Office of Information and Technology (OI&T) representative to ensure that all actions are consistent with current VA policies and procedures prior to implementation.
