Description: Protege is an open source ontology development environment that utilizes a graphical user interface (GUI) to define ontologies. Protege`s architecture can be used to develop, build, and maintain simple and complex Web Ontology Language (OWL) ontology-based applications. The Protege platform supports two main ways of modeling ontologies: Protege-Frames and Protege-OWL editors. The Protege-Frames editor enables users to build and populate ontologies that are frame-based, in accordance with the Open Knowledge Base Connectivity protocol (OKBC). The Protege-OWL editor enables users to build ontologies for the Semantic Web, in particular in the World Wide Web Consortiums (W3C) Web Ontology Language (OWL).

This technology does not utilize a database, as data generated by this technology is saved to the user`s local drive.

Note: For working with frames-based ontologies users can only use Protege 3.x. Frames support is not currently available in Protege 4.0 and higher. Also, Protege 3.x only supports OWL 1.0 language support while Protege 4.0 and higher supports OWL 2.0 language support.
Technology/Standard Usage Requirements: Users must ensure their use of this technology/standard is consistent with VA policies and standards, including, but not limited to, VA Handbooks 6102 and 6500; VA Directives 6004, 6513, and 6517; and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).
