Description: The AudioRENEWAL module allows patients to request a renewal of their prescriptions directly from within the AudioCARE telephone REFILL system. AudioCARE automatically sends the renewal requests to the provider as either Information Alerts or Unsigned Notifications. If a patient does not make a status check phone call, and later requests a renewal again, the system searches and returns the current status based on the previous renewal request.

All Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI) are retrieved from Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), and are used to identify and validate the patient calling and the prescription number that is entered. Renewal requests then get posted to a specific location within VistA to be transferred to the Pharmacy. Further, information is written to the Cache database in order to create reports that include details regarding phone calls that were placed and the prescription renewals that were requested.
Technology/Standard Usage Requirements: Users must ensure their use of this technology/standard is consistent with VA policies and standards, including, but not limited to, VA Handbooks 6102 and 6500; VA Directives 6004, 6513, and 6517; and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). Users must ensure sensitive data is properly protected in compliance with all VA regulations. Prior to use of this technology, users should check with their supervisor, Information Security Officer (ISO), Facility Chief Information Officer (CIO), or local Office of Information and Technology (OI&T) representative to ensure that all actions are consistent with current VA policies and procedures prior to implementation.
