Windows Virtual Desktop

VA staff that make use of a virtual desktop can now connect directly, without the need to first access CAG or VPN. This is initially only available for Windows-based, VA-issued GFE and personally owned Windows 10 devices.

Initial Setup

  1. Using your desired browser (Chrome, Edge, or Internet Explorer), download and unzip VA_WVD_EnablementPackage.zip
  2. In the unzipped folder launch the file named “VA_WVD_EnablementPackage.exe"
  3. When a security warning appears to add the VA-Internal-S2-RCA1-v1 certificate, click "Yes"
  4. A dialog displaying “Installation completed. Opening application.” Appears. Click “OK” to continue.
  5. The “Remote Desktop” application will open and you will be greeted with the “Sign in” window.
  6. Insert your PIV card into the PIV reader attached to your PC.
  7. Within the “Sign in” window, enter your PIV username and click “Next”.
  8. When the “prod.adfs.federation.va.gov” window appears, click on “Sign in using an X.509 certificate”.
  9. Choose your PIV certificate. Click OK.
  10. For BYOD(personal, non-VA PCs) only: When asked if you would like to “Use this account everywhere on your device” uncheck the box, and click “This app only”.
  11. You should be greeted with one or more desktops to connect to. Depending whether you are connecting from a GFE or BYOD(personal), double click the appropriate icon.
  12. When prompted to log in:
    1. Select “More choices”
    2. Choose your PIV credentials
    3. Provide your PIN
    4. Click OK.
  13. You are now connected to the VA Windows Virtual Desktop Environment!
  14. When your work is complete, please log off like a normal Windows PC.
    1. Click the Start Button
    2. Click the person icon (Your name should be next to it)
    3. Click Sign out

Subsequent Connections

To reconnect, you have two options

  1. Open the “Remote Desktop” application within your start menu, and then double click on the desired icon (see step 12 above)
  2. Sign out process described above
  3. Click on your start button, find the desired Windows Virtual Desktop icon, and click on it.
  4. When prompted to log in:
    1. Select “More choices”
    2. Choose your PIV credentials
    3. Provide your PIN
    4. Click OK.

When your work is complete, please log off like a normal Windows PC.

  1. Click the Start Button
  2. Click the person icon (Your name should be next to it)
  3. Click Sign out
