Authentication Methods for Mobile Apps and VA.gov

Veterans must authorize access to their information using one of three VA-approved authentication methods to enjoy new VA capabilities

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has released capabilities that enable Veterans to authorize access, securely manage, and interact with their health care and benefits information using VA.gov and third-party apps across their Android or iOS mobile devices. Through these apps and capabilities, VA is creating a modern, streamlined, and accessible experience designed to improve and expand services to Veterans.

As data security and Veteran’s consent are of the upmost importance to VA, a Veteran must authorize access to their information using a VA-approved authentication method before an app can access their data. At any point, a Veteran can change or remove access permissions from an app. Veterans can choose from one of three authentication methods: My HealtheVet, ID.me, or DS Logon. The following video was developed in partnership with Veterans to illustrate how to use each authentication method.

These capabilities were built by VA’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), which established VA’s Lighthouse developer portal. Lighthouse enables developers to build helpful tools and services — such as mobile apps — for Veterans.

VA is continuously working to better services and the customer experience for our Veterans, and OIT is at the forefront, tapping emerging technologies, connecting developers with VA data, and utilizing human centered design to provide Veterans with new, innovative solutions.
