Description: Reports Authoring Visual Environment (RAVE) Reports is a visual report design solution intended to simplify the process of adding reports to an application. This technology can be used to create a variety of reports, from simple banded reports to more complex, highly customized reports.

This technology is available in two editions: Developer and Architect. This entry covers both editions.

This technology runs reports by accessing and pulling data from multiple VA-supported databases, as well as custom, non-database data such as memory arrays or record structure files. Report layout definitions are stored in .RAV files which are a proprietary binary format and contain only the design information provided by the developer to create the desired reports (there is no encryption). These files are stored locally on the user`s hard drive, and can be distributed with the application or embedded within the application. Configuration information for the visual report designer is also stored locally on the developer`s computer in the public Documents folder.
Technology/Standard Usage Requirements: Users must ensure their use of this technology/standard is consistent with VA policies and standards, including, but not limited to, VA Handbooks 6102 and 6500; VA Directives 6004, 6513, and 6517; and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). Users must ensure sensitive data is properly protected in compliance with all VA regulations. Prior to use of this technology, users should check with their supervisor, Information Security Officer (ISO), Facility Chief Information Officer (CIO), or local Office of Information and Technology (OI&T) representative to ensure that all actions are consistent with current VA policies and procedures prior to implementation.
