Description: National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO) Annotator is a web service that annotates text with relevant ontology concepts based on the textual metadata. NCBO Annotator is one of the components of NCBO Virtual Appliance, which is a copy of the NCBO software.

The technology is a script that runs on various files and has two main parts: a dictionary of terms in English and a set of programs that take the dictionary and recognize terms in the text. The bulk of the work is done by a Java executable file with the addition of Perl and Python scripts to manage issues like simultaneous threads.

The technology does not connect to other devices or hardware systems. If a user specifies a remote ontology for the system to download, the system will attempt to obtain the ontology at the specified address. The product stores data on its local server. Additionally, data is not encrypted.
Technology/Standard Usage Requirements: Users must ensure their use of this technology/standard is consistent with VA policies and standards, including, but not limited to, VA Handbooks 6102 and 6500; VA Directives 6004, 6513, and 6517; and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, including Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS). Users must ensure sensitive data is properly protected in compliance with all VA regulations. Prior to use of this technology, users should check with their supervisor, Information System Security Officer (ISSO), Facility Chief Information Officer (CIO), or local Office of Information and Technology (OI&T) representative to ensure that all actions are consistent with current VA policies and procedures prior to implementation.
