Description: XQuery is a query and functional programming language that is designed to query collections of Extensible Markup Language (XML) data. This specification can be used to extract information and generate reports from data in an XML database and convert XML data to XML HyperText Markup Language (XHTML) for web publication. Additionally, this specification provides syntax allowing new XML documents to be constructed.

XQuery is an extension of XML Path Language (XPath) version 2.0. Any expression that is syntactically valid and executes successfully in both XPath 2.0 and XQuery will return the same result in both languages. Since these languages are so closely related, their grammars and language descriptions are generated from both a common source to ensure consistency, along with editors working with specifications closely together.
